Soldier Biography

Captain John  Thomas

Sgt. Thomas began his military career in 1933 with the U.S. Navy. In 1937, he was an engineer aboard the Minesweeper/Gunboat USS ESTEEM. At the time, the ship was part of the U.S. Navy Asiatic Fleet, assigned to duty off the coast of China. When the Japanese Army invaded China in 1937, the ship was sent up the Yangtze River to Shanghai to evacuate American Dignitaries. While the Japanese attacked the city, Thomas and a few of his fellow crewmembers were dispatched to locate and escort back to the ship the American Officials. After locating the Americans, Thomas and the others were forced to fight their way back to the ship, killing several Japanese soldiers along the way. The Esteem fought her way out of Shanghai, down the Yangtze River, and out of China.

Soldier Biography

Technical Cpl. Connor "Pierre" Thomas

PFC/Specialist Connor Thomas joined the U.S. Army like most everyone else in America after December 7th, 1941. During basic training, he was chosen to attend further training as an Army Medic. He was initially assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division. When it was learned that Private Thomas spoke French, the Army hastily re-assigned him to the 1st Infantry Division in July 1942. The 1st I.D. left for England in August 1942. In England the 1st I.D. began training for the amphibious invasion of French North Africa. Private Thomas' C.O thought his skills as a French speaking interpreter made him more valuable in an infantry rifleman squad. He was transferred to Fox Company and assigned to Sgt. Thomas. Private Thomas started to wonder if learning to speak the romantic language of French to talk to girls was such a good idea after all...

Recruit Soldier Enlistment

The First Infantry Reenactment Group is always interested in recruiting new members. Potential candidates should consider the investment that this hobby requires. New members are required to have a basic Infantryman impression uniform, as well as a weapon. Exceptions to acquiring a weapon would be considered on an as needed basis, such as a Medic impression, ammunition handler, and so on. Also to be considered is the time commitment that the hobby requires. Many events that the unit takes part in should be attended by as many members as possible. Most of these events take place over a weekend period and may involve a holiday weekend. Some of the events may involve travel upwards of 100 miles or more. Members are required to be physically fit, with a weight closely appropriate to height. No, a potential recruit doesn't have to look like Errol Flynn or Clark Gable, or be able to run a four minute mile, but some level of physical fitness is required. Remember, you're supposed to look somewhat like an American soldier during the 1940's.[ If it helps, look at period photos of U.S. servicemen and see if you're close.] Members will be required to pay a $20 membership per year and again, will be responsible for all of their own equipment and blanks. If you are interested in becoming a member, contact SGT. J. Thomas at the contact information provided.
